« Chill » provient de l’argot anglais signifiant « se relaxer ». Sous ce terme sont regroupés tous les genres de musique électronique caractérisés par un style moelleux, de tempo moyen. On le décrit aussi comme la « douce techno » ou « l’électronique calme ».

The term "chill" comes from the English slang meaning "relax." Under this heading are grouped all genres of electronic music characterized by a soft medium tempo style. It is also described as "soft techno" or "quiet electronic."

Le Chill Out est globalement doux et relaxant (moins intense que les musiques dont il est inspiré), mais n’est pas pour autant dépourvu de sonorités psychédéliques.
Son tempo s’échelonne de 80 à 110 bpm de façon prédominante, mais peut également monter jusqu’à 130 bpm dans certaines formes de Trip hop (cf. sous genres).
This genre is born in the 90s in the "chill-out rooms" night clubs, for the dancers to rest between two passages in the main room.
Originally, these "chill-out rooms" went popularity in the clubs of England, including Manchester Konspiracy in the 80s years. These filled with comfortable sofas and cousins ??rooms, psychedelic lights were illuminated ambiancées an intentionally slow music to contrast with the dance floor.
In fact in 1992, a law in England forced the clubs to fill these chill-out rooms in response to an increase in serious injuries and deaths by heat shock or dehydration associated with ecstasy use.
It was thanks to the label Ministry of Sound in London and "Chillout Sessions" that the Chill Out became recognized as a separate category of electronic music in 2001.

Ce genre est né dans les années 90s dans les « salles de chill-out » des night clubs, destinées à faire que les danseurs se reposent entre deux passages dans la salle principale.
A l’origine, ces « chill-out rooms » montèrent en popularité dans les clubs d’Angleterre, notamment à Manchester au Konspiracy, dans les années 80s. Ces salles remplies de canapés et de cousins confortables, illuminées de lumières psychédéliques étaient ambiancées d’une musique intentionnellement lente pour contraster avec la piste de danse.
D’ailleurs en 1992, une loi en Angleterre obligea les clubs à se pourvoir de ces chill-out rooms en réponse à une augmentation des blessés graves et morts par choc thermique ou déshydratation liés à la consommation d’ecstasy.
C’est finalement grâce au label du Ministry of Sound de Londres et ses « Chillout Sessions » que le Chill Out devint reconnu comme une catégorie à part entière de musique électronique en 2001.

Le Trip Hop : principal sous-genre associé au Chill Out actuellement. Né de « la fusion du hip hop et de l’electronica » (Slantmagazine Music Review, 2010). Il constitue le melting pot de plusieurs styles, ralliant la musique d’ambiance aux breakdown rythmiques de styles tels que le hip hop. On y retrouve également des caractéristiques de R&B, de Dub (rythmes de reggae) et de House. Le Trip Hop peut également être de nature très expérimentale (sous l’égide le l’electronica donc).
L' Ambient House : plus ancienne forme du Chill Out, puisqu’elle émergea dans les années 1980s. Elle combine des éléments de musique d’ambiance et d’Acid House (cf. Chicago house). L’Ambient House comprend dans sa forme typique un classique bass-drum de House ainsi que des pads de synthés (longs accords diffus de synthétiseurs utilisés dans les passages calmes) et des samples de voix, le tout s’intégrant dans un contexte de musique « atmosphérique » (Allmusic.com, 2011).
L' Ambient : à la frontière de la musique, ce style, né dans les années 1970s, diffère des autres formes de « musiques de fond » dans le fait qu’il a pour but de promouvoir l’idiosyncrasie (la singularité) acoustique et atmosphérique, et d’induire le calme et de l’espace pour penser (par opposition aux musiques de fond qui cherchent à rendre l’environnement « plus vivant »). L’Ambient se doit donc d’être « as ignorable as it is interesting » (Brian Eno, Music for Airports, 2011).
Il inclut cependant différentes sous-catégories :
- l’ Ambient industrial (au sens expérimental : beaucoup d’effets et des samples très variés),
- le Dark Ambient (à caractère discordant, pouvant inclure un lointain beat),
- le Space Ambient (évoquant la contemplation de l’espace, au sens large),
- l’ Isolationist Ambient (utilisant les répétitions, dissonances, microtonalités et mauvaises harmonies, pour créer un sentiment de malaise, de désolation, souvent confondu au Post-Metal)
- l' Ambient Dub (sons reggae + ambient music)
Le Downtempo : équivalent de l’Ambient, mais avec une boite à rythme (un beat) ou un groove en plus. Comme son nom l’indique, son tempo n’excède guère les 90 bpm.
Le Nu Jazz : né dans les années 1990s. Regroupe toutes les formes de jazz qui incluent des éléments provenant d’autres styles musicaux (funk, soul, EDM). Les instruments traditionnels comme les plus expérimentaux peuvent être employés. Cela rend le jazz « plus fun » (selon Tony Brewer, célèbre joueur de baseball).
Le New-age : musique introduite dans les années 1970s, utilisée pour créer une atmosphère inspiratrice (artistique), de relaxation (yoga, massage), de méditation, ou de lecture. Il s’agit donc d’apaisement, en lien avec la spiritualité New Age. Ce style comprend des formes électroniques comme acoustiques. Elle met en jeu des harmonies modales (simples) et consonantes en longs pads soutenus, des bruits de la nature et récemment des parties vocales inspirées des amérindiens, des tibétains ou de la mythologie scandinave (celtique).
Le Chillstep : 2011 est l'année des premières apparitions du terme "chillstep", mais ce fut réellement depuis l’apparition du Brostep (2008) que ce style commenca à prendre son envol. De son nom, le (Chill/Step) apparaît donc comme le résultat d'une fusion entre la musique chill out et le Dubstep. Cette influence est ressentie par la contorsion des basses (type wobble) que l'on retrouve sur des tempos très lents, de 110 à 130 bpm, où se mêle de temps à autre la présence de voix lancinantes.
Le Post-dubstep : né en 2009 à Londres, il est issu de la fusion entre la techno expérimentale, la deep house et l’UK garage, tout en s’inspirant de la dubstep pour créer une atmosphère planante et futuriste. Ce genre plutôt expérimental (donc souvent appelé "electronica"), se caractérise par un tempo plus ‘‘lent’’ que le Dubstep : de 130 à 135 bpm mais avec parfois un kick tombant sur chaque temps, pouvant donc être considéré comme une musique de danse. Il connait un certain épanouissement depuis 2010.
La Chill Trap : genre apparu récemment avec la montée en popularité de la Trap au sein de la musique électronique. La quête naturelle d’originalité dans laquelle se lancent les producteurs, y compris de Trap, a mené à la naissance de cet agréable mariage entre les atmosphères apaisantes de l’Ambient et les rythmes syncopés et lents de la Trap. En dehors d’une grande part électronique provenant de l'Ambient, de nouveaux thèmes y sont explorés tels que : la musique indigène (flûtes de pan etc…), le Moyen Orient (luth, cithare…), le latino (guitare pincée, trompettes…), la musique celtique (violons, cornemuses)… On y retrouve donc souvent cette recherche de sonorités « acoustiques » originales nous éloignant du ‘‘tout synthétique’’ de l’EDM Trap. Si des paroles y sont présentes, elles y seront chantées plutôt que rappées.
Trip Hop : Main subgenre associated with Chill Out now. Born of "the fusion of hip hop and electronica" (Slantmagazine Music Review, 2010). It is the melting pot of different styles, rallying background music to the rhythmic breakdown of styles such as hip hop. It also includes features R & B, Dub (reggae rhythms) and House . Trip Hop can be very experimental in nature (led the electronica so.)
The Ambient House : oldest form of Chill Out, since it emerged in the 1980s. It combines elements of ambient music and Acid House (see Chicago house). The Ambient House includes in its typical form a classic bass-drum House as well as synth pads (long diffuse agreements synthesizers used in quiet passages) and voice samples, all integrated in a context of music "atmospheric" (Allmusic.com, 2011).
The Ambient on the border of the music, style, born in the 1970s, differs from other forms of "background music" in that it aims to promote idiosyncrasy (the singularity) noise and air, and induce calm and space to think (as opposed to background music that seek to make "more alive" environment). The Ambient must therefore be "as ignorable as it is interesting" (Brian Eno, Music for Airports, 2011).
However, it includes several subcategories:
- Ambient industrial (experimental sense: lots of effects and a variety of samples),
- Dark Ambient (on the discordant nature, which may include a distant beat)
- Space Ambient (referring to the contemplation of space, in the broadest sense),
- Isolationist Ambient (using repetition, dissonance, and bad Scale Tune harmonies to create a sense of discomfort, distress, often confused the Post-Metal)
- Ambient Dub (sounds reggae + ambient music)
Downtempo equivalent of Ambient, but with a drum machine (a beat) or a groove and more. As the name suggests, its tempo hardly exceeds 90 bpm.
Nu Jazz was born in the 1990s. Brings together all forms of jazz that include elements from other musical styles (funk, soul, EDM). Traditional instruments such as more experimental can be used. This makes the "more fun" jazz (as Tony Brewer, famous baseball player.)
New Age: music introduced in the 1970s, used to create an inspiring atmosphere (artistic), relaxation (yoga, massage), meditation or reading. This is so calming, in connection with New Age spirituality. This style includes electronic as acoustic forms. It involves modal harmonies (simple) and consonants in long sustained pads, sounds of nature and recently vocals inspired by Indian, Tibetan or Scandinavian mythology (Celtic).
Chillstep: 2011 is the year of the first appearances of "chillstep" but it was actually from the appearance of Brostep (2008) that this style began to take off. His name, (Chill / Step) appears as the result of a merger between the chill-out music and Dubstep. This influence is felt by contortion bass (wobble type) found on very slow tempos from 110 to 130 bpm, where blends from time to time the presence of haunting voice.
Post-dubstep: born in 2009 in London, he comes from the fusion of experimental techno, deep house and UK garage, while drawing inspiration from dubstep to create an atmosphere planing and futuristic. This rather experimental genre (so often called "electronica"), is characterized by a tempo more 'slow' the Dubstep: from 130 to 135 bpm but sometimes with a kick falling over each time, which can be considered as a music dance. He knows some development since 2010.
Chill Trap: genre recently appeared with the rise in popularity of the Trap in electronic music. Natural looking for originality in which embark producers, including Trap, led to the birth of this nice marriage between the soothing atmosphere of the Atmosphere and the syncopated rhythms and slow the Trap. Apart from a large electronic hand from the Ambient, new themes are explored, such as indigenous music (pan flutes etc ...), Middle East (lute, zither ...), the Latin (guitar pinch trumpets ...), Celtic music (violins, bagpipes) ... therefore it often finds this research sounds "acoustic" moving away from the original 'all synthetic' SHS Trap. If words are present, they will be sung rather than rapped.
